North to Fairbanks!!

Alaska PTA Convention 2008
April 17-19, 2008
Westmark Convention Center!

Our theme this year is “Charting Our Course” which means looking at where we’ve been, where we’re going, and how we’re going to get there! We want to celebrate our achievements and focus on reviewing what works and what doesn’t, prioritizing, planning ahead, and preparation for a successful future.

Thursday evening, Apr 17, is the kick-off reception. Parents, teachers, students, and community members can come out to meet our exhibitors, have a snack, and hear the opening comments. Conventioneers can then participate in the Program Roundtables to discuss a slew of important issues and learn some “best practices”.

First-time convention goers can learn all about convention at the Friday breakfast and Regions will have time to get-together in the evening.

Rooms are available for $69 at the Westmark and you can use their airport shuttle. We can help each other get around town for whatever errands you might want to run.

We’re hoping for a big turnout early Saturday morning, Apr 19, for our “Walk For Healthy Kids” to raise awareness and funds for wellness programs. Bring your friends, kids, co-workers, teachers, students, staff and your PTA/Education banners, signs, noisemakers, etc for a quick stroll around downtown.

To that end, National PTA and Cartoon Network launched Rescuing Recess, a campaign that champions the importance of recess for kids. Developed with direction from an advisory board of leaders and policymakers in children’s health and education, Rescuing Recess seeks to connect educators, parents, and kids as advocates to bring back or keep recess.

Good news!

Alaska PTA has once again successfully submitted resolution to be considered by the delegates at the National PTA Convention. Delegates will be considering “School Trust Lands and Funds” and “Recognition and Care of School-Age Children with Diabetes” in Phoenix, AZ, June 23 - 26, 2006. If you are planning to attend National PTA Convention, make sure you contact the Alaska PTA office for a voting delegate card.

The Alaska Public School Land Trust Committee is very excited about having a resolution on “School Trust Lands and Funds” on the agenda at the National PTA Convention this coming June. It has taken years and the combined work of many PTA members and our C.L.A.S.S partners to get a resolution that was acceptable to the National PTA Board of Directors as meeting the criteria for consideration by the Delegates. A big Thank You to Alaska PTA and its local units for the continuing support of this important issue by the passage of our Alaska PTA resolution on the subject and the inclusion of the Alaska Public School Land Trust in the Alaska PTA Legislative Priorities for the past 2 years.

What if there is a Strike?

Now that the strike vote has been taken, Anchorage schools could be hit by a teachers strike with as little as 72 hours notice.

No matter your personal feelings about the issues that have gotten us to this point,
As a PTA Leader you cannot take sides. Our members consist of Parents and Teachers as well as other community members. PTA peole are passinate, it is likely that all of your members have very strong feelings about the possibility of a strike.

PTAs must remember that the mission is about the best interests of the children. We must make sure that the children are safe, taken care of and ready to learn while this is all sorted out by the grown ups.

The link is to the updated Alaska PTA Strike Manual, In it you will find information to help you with situations you may be faced with in the face of this strike.
